South Shields's supporters crossed their fingers, but Ollie Stockdale was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 6th minute Neil Slade shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Bill Kay saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Scott Whieldon hit a great freekick 9 minutes into the match. After a defensive mix-up in Purple Cobras's zone, Stuart Welch stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Bill Kay came out of the goal and Stuart Welch tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Bill Kay showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Ollie Stockdale in the 14th minute of the match. In the 20th minute of the match Scott Whieldon sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Vince Piercy skillfully saved the ball. Bill Kay made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ollie Stockdale in the 25th minute of play. The supporters of Purple Cobras booed when South Shields was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 27 match minutes in a wonderful position. Cliff Stockdale didn't get a good kick on the ball. A collision led to South Shields getting a freekick after 51 minutes play. Stuart Welch hit a great ball. Den Mulligan charged in rather forcefully in the 62nd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Den Mulligan the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. Bill Kay was a little too slow when Ollie Stockdale got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 64th minute. The score was now 0-1. 75 minutes into the match, South Shields's goal looked a bit too open when Den Mulligan came free, but Vince Piercy reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Den Mulligan took the ball and in the 76 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Vince Piercy. Vince Piercy dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-1. Martin Folwill recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 79th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Bill Kay showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Ollie Stockdale, who was totally free with the ball in the 83rd minute. Bill Kay stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Neil Slade's shot from short distance in the 84th minute. Vince Piercy made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Johnny Attwood in the 86th minute of play. Vince Piercy showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Martin Folwill in the 90th minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Den Mulligan in the 93rd minute of play forced South Shields's goalkeeper Vince Piercy to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Johnny Attwood had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 95th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. South Shields were disappointed that they only managed a draw, even though they felt themselves to be the better team.
