Falcão Couto didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Fluminense Football Club. Lino Lopez fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 15th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Arnaldo Toledo having to interfere. 27 minutes into the game, Felipe Lucas was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Fluminense Football Club's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Fala Sério FC the free kick. After 27 played minutes Fluminense Football Club got a freekick which was hit by Felipe Lucas. 28 minutes into the game, Gualter Silveira was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Fluminense Football Club's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Fala Sério FC the free kick. After 28 played minutes Fluminense Football Club got a freekick which was hit by Gualter Silveira. An unexpectedly hard shot by William Papin in the 30th minute of play forced Fluminense Football Club's goalkeeper Arnaldo Toledo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Gil Maciel had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 33rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Felipe Lucas in the 35thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Falcão Couto, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. A collision led to Fala Sério FC getting a freekick after 36 minutes play. Ronaldinho Teixeira hit a great ball. Falcão Couto came out of the goal in the 39th minute to try and stop a shot by Fluminense Football Club's Gil Maciel. But to his dismay, Gil Maciel quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-0. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Gil Maciel to make the kick off. In the 52nd match minute, Fluminense Football Club was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Tarcisio Bittencourt to maneuver through the defense. Fala Sério FC's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Ronaldinho Teixeira in the 55th minute. The corner went over the outstretched arms of Fluminense Football Club's goalie and right to Baltazar Cearense. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. Fluminense Football Club's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. In the 57th match minute, Fluminense Football Club was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Arlindo Andrade to maneuver through the defense. Ronaldinho Teixeira was slow to take the kick. During this time Fala Sério FC's players had a chance to rest. The corner ended in Ronaldinho Teixeira almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but Fluminense Football Club's Arnaldo Toledo did a great save. Tarcisio Bittencourt charged in rather forcefully in the 79th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Tarcisio Bittencourt the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. The supporters of Fala Sério FC booed when Fluminense Football Club was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 80 match minutes in a wonderful position. Tarcisio Bittencourt didn't get a good kick on the ball. 87 minutes into the game, César Ceresso was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Fluminense Football Club's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Fala Sério FC the free kick. In the 87th minute, one of Fluminense Football Club:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Fluminense Football Club. When Gil Maciel came up free with the goalie in the 95th minute, the Fluminense Football Club fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Gil Maciel couldn't finish the play. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by João Carvalho during the 96th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. João Carvalho hit a great freekick 96 minutes into the match. In the 97th minute, Elói de Queirós got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered when the referee blew the final whistle. Fluminense Football Club had won after a very even match.
