Fausto Ferraz breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Claudinei Sabóia hit a great freekick 38 minutes into the match. After a defensive mix-up in Merusca F&P's zone, Rui da Costa stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Agnaldo Tinoco came out of the goal and Rui da Costa tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 44 minutes into the game, Claudinho Bezerra cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-1. Fausto Ferraz was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. The S.E.R. Caxias do Sul players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Merusca F&P were winning 0-1.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Claudinho Bezerra stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Fausto Ferraz made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Edmílson Vidal in the 52nd minute of play. Agnaldo Tinoco came out of the goal in the 54th minute to try and stop a shot by S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's Marcel Abreu. But to his dismay, Marcel Abreu quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-1. Claudinho Bezerra kicked well hit freekick during the 62nd minute of the match. S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's Marcel Abreu got a good chance for a goal in the 63rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The audience was convinced that Edmílson Vidal's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Fausto Ferraz was relentless in the 78th minute of the game. Artur Abreu's late challenge caught a S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card.
