The audience thought a goal was coming when Dário da Mata got free with Diamantino Meirelles in the 22nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After some careless play in the CGMS FC defense, Hílton Garcia kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Mazinho Alves. The CGMS FC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Mazinho Alves should have stopped the shot. Diamantino Meirelles took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Caco Martins, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Mazinho Alves showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Hílton Garcia in the 32nd minute of the match. After some fancy dribbling in the 56th minute, Virgílio do Nascimento managed to get in a good position for a shot. Esporte Clube Bahia's supporters rose to their feet, but Virgílio do Nascimento was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Mazinho Alves breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
