Your best "investments" - players bought cheaply and sold expens

Badge image
Do you ever buy players with the intention of only developing them into sale products? Do you buy players to use them (mainly) just as financial investments? What are your best investments, how much profit have you made with buying a single player and selling him ahead?

I guess I'm a fairly new manager with two and a half year experience. However, there have been a few players who I have bought to a small role (the substitutes' bench) to develop them into sale products. After the intensive training camp in autumn 2013, I sold some players with 5x or 10x profit (obviously they had been very cheap when I had once bought them). Recently I bought a young player with 101 EUR to develop him for 2,5 months and then sell him with 100k :) Of course, it wasn't a big profit because I also had to pay his salary every week.

I bought this guy for $1 - he was unmaxed 7 shooting at the time so I was unlucky he maxed on 8. Haven't sold yet, he might make a midfielder if tackling doesn't max too early.

William Owen on my squad, bought for £1500 he was 5 speed unmaxed, 8 shooting unmaxed, but maxed in 7 stamina and 7 ball control
He is now 9 speed 7 stamina 8 shooting (training on his 9th shooting as we speak)

The best part is, he is only 20!!! I

Four seasons ago, I bought Wesley Van Lier just because I thought: let's do something totally crazy! As the training graph was hidden, you would have thought he had a lot of maxings when I bought him like this, the 4th of January 2014:

It seemed that he wasn't maxed at all (except for stamina), and he hadn't even enjoyed ITC until then! I only paid 1 187 EUR... H

You could think that I have always been very happy with this player, because he didn't cost me a dime, and he is the best defender of my team. He might be too weak for some of you, but he has never let me down except for one time he got a red card I think!

Pfft, I'm not good at investments.

After checking through the numbers I the biggest profit I've got from a player was 191,500 GBP.

Shaun Story-Moore... I wish I still had his stats (lost all my previous players stats when my old laptop died), he's spent more time in Division 1 than I have.
Bought him for 50,000 GBP sold him for 241,500 GBP

Wow, tosspot has a nice eye for making managerzone money :)

I wonder why some managers sell very unmaxed players (like Van Lier). Though as I have never had club membership, I was unaware of some unmaxings even among my own former youths, until the training graphs were visible for everybody for a short while. I also found out that pretty many of the players I had bought had unexpected unmaxings (like stamina 7 unmaxed for a striker).

I don't sell many players of value as I buy them young and train them up myself for first team action. If they max badly then they'll more than likely be sacked. But I currently have this guy who was nothing special when I bought for 190k 7-8 seasons ago, if I sold him now he'd make a hefty profit

I've been checking my recent transfers from the past 3 months and I got:

Darius Gold - paid $50 000, sold for $1 050 000
Duke Grove - paid $2 000, sold for $472 501
Louie Eaton - paid $2100, sold for $882 001

Never been that kind of manager, strategy a few years back was to buy players with a couple of high skills for decent enough money but way off fully developed and see where I got with them. The good ones stayed until retirement, the others I generally sold at a similar price or a small loss. Never had a complete write off though.

All my money was generally earned through the Youth Team with Cups or graduate sales.

Developing players is probably the aspect of the game that I enjoy the most in MZ.
Some of my best investments are:

Mats Hummels id: 180622358 955 000 ---> 2 400 000 USD
Pavlin Dedov id: 176087516 550 000 ---> 2 700 000 USD
Stoycho Dodov id: 180259612 250 000 ---> 1 270 000 USD (7 days later he was resold for 2 800 000 which pissed me off) :)
Larry Roper id: 168184619 500 000 ---> 1 500 000 USD
Martin McCabe id: 140163778 200 000 ---> 1 700 000 USD (8 months later dowo bought him for 165 000, sweet deal) :)

A couple of guys that have already retired:

Teodoro Wyatt id: 128036351 5 000 ---> 1 500 000 USD
Milan Yoskov id: 127620925 1 000 ---> 920 000 USD

And a few Keepers that I bought for peanuts, trained them in Keeping only until they maxed at 9 or 10.

Thanh Sparks id: 158724464 7 000 ---> 920 000 USD
Ronald Epps id: 173478502 27 000 ---> 945 000 USD
Lanny McMillian id: 181284033 2 300 ---> 1 150 000 USD

Currently I have this two guys that I am hoping to make a profit out of:
Thomas Arnold

Age: 59 (Retired)

Pablo Sneed

Age: 58 (Retired)

I bought Thomas Arnold for 195 000 and Pablo Sneed for 10 000.

Investing in young players and hoping for a big return is one of the most enjoyable aspects of MZ. Just a few days ago I set my new record when I sold a player for 4.2 million EUR when I had bought him for just 0.11 million.

I never buy players as an investment case. every new signings needs to have the potential to play in my first eleven at some stage and I only sell them if they catch a maxing which definitely prevents them from that. Nevertheless there were some nice gains (1-2m) in the past.

There are different methods in every country depending on how the transfer page is for that country. I think in Canada we export our "talent" to the other richer countries hook line and sinker!

In Australia on majority we keep players to ourselves, when a team sells up that's when the sharks circle and the better players get snapped up by big spending overseas teams. Usually happens when player are mid to late 20's or early 30's. Good unmaxed young prospects almost never appear on the market, period.... as the active managerial pool is so small you do everything else to try and find a way to not have to sell on your best players early

I've never been good investor but I still keep trying to be better.
So my the best investment was Ziemowit. I bought him for 300.000 EUR and sold for 3.000.000.

However, it turned out it wasn't the best decision, as currently he's at Polish National Team and looks like below. Well, it seems I was not patient enough ;)

Ziemowit Glaza

I've got one more, in my opinion it's my the best ever.
I bought him for 80.000 EUR when was 18. I didn't know anything about his blocks so I was very surprised when it turned out he is completely 'green'. He looked like this.

And I sold him for..... Wait a minute! I've never sold him, he still plays in my team :D
He's the real legend of my club, the top scorer ever. Unfortunately, this is his last season. ;(
And here he is.

Polish transfer market is very attractive and give many possibilities. In our country there is big competition for u21 players. Many u21 teams have their season budget over 20 kk. Also there are a few teams with over 40 kk on their accounts :)

Most of my big money moves have been selling youth. For players which I've later sold on I usually only make a small profit or break even. I had a stint where I was overactive in the market and wound up selling a lot of players for a loss to avoid bankruptcy.

Best investment was 112 USD for Gavin Turner. He turned out to be a midfield stalwart for my squad until he retired. Now he's serving as a coach.

Carsyn Toomey, bought 500k, sold for 2.4mil

Last 9 months I was relearning the game and kind of waiting for my youths to grow 18. Meanwhile, I bought a lot of players and eventually sold them in order to make space for the full grown youth. This player hunting resulted in a net profit of more than 8 million Euro's. So, lets say 3M Euro's per season: it's really rewarding!

greetings from the bald city foorball club. we are all bald here. almost all.

you see, i don't buy players anymore because i use only my own youths (my own players are bald and the outsiders aren't). it has been almost ten seasons when i last bought a player - there are two foreigners still playing for my side. both were quite poor and were a bit overpaid but they both were changed to different playing position and are excellent in what they do. one was a striker and was later changed to attacking midfielder / forward (control, speed and stamina 8, shooting 9, passing 10) and the other was a midfielder who later changed to central defender (speed, stamina, heading, passing and aerial 8, tackling 10). you might say i am quite an arsene wenger or luis van gaal, offering own players many chances. but what can i do? my team is bald city and only in our bald city people are bald. why? read it in my team info.

and that is the biggest miracle - i was a slovene champion one season - with only home made players!

on the ball city!

oh, and by the way, welcome to managerzone, hanhi!
