A collision led to Vieiras getting a freekick after 15 minutes play. Antônio Breckenfeld hit a great ball. After 20 minutes, Clóvis Queirós mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Vieiras and the Vasco Da Gama players grew even worse after the yellow card. Elano Miranda took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Edgard Marinho, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 39 played minutes Vasco Da Gama got a freekick which was hit by Guga Pontes. A collision led to Vasco Da Gama getting a freekick after 43 minutes play. Edgard Marinho hit a great ball. After a defensive mix-up in Vieiras's zone, Nildo de Mendonça stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Elano Miranda came out of the goal and Nildo de Mendonça tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

51 minutes into the match, Vasco Da Gama's Nildo de Mendonça sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Elano Miranda narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Vieiras's Elano Miranda played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Edgard Marinho in the 54th minute of play. Augusto Fernandes's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Valdir Braga read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 59th minute of play. Nildo de Mendonça came free with the goalkeeper in the 65th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Elano Miranda could save by the left post. In the 70th minute of the match, Edgard Marinho tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Elano Miranda saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. In the 73rd minute the ball was on its way in behind Vieiras's goalkeeper Elano Miranda, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Sílvio Luiz Soeiro kicked well hit freekick during the 76th minute of the match. Elano Miranda came out of the goal in the 85th minute to try and stop a shot by Vasco Da Gama's Edgard Marinho. But to his dismay, Edgard Marinho quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. Edgard Marinho could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 89th minute of the match, but Elano Miranda made a huge save.
